In September (and on a few occasions previously to that) I raised the matter of homelessness in Birmingham at a Council Housing and Urban Renewal Committee, the fact that toilet paper was being rationed out to families who had been placed in a Bed & Breakfast Hotel. I use the word hotel advisedly, it was, is no more than a doss house for the unfortunate, yet a major earner of cash for the 'hotel' owner, who earns upwards of £40 per night per bed used. I estimate that this particular owner is raking in in excess £250,000 a month.
However I'm digressing from the main point, which is that Birmingham Council, should already have arrangements in place to place families in to temporary accommodation, which are empty rentable houses in the private sector, whereby the 'new tenant' although only temporary placed, would then claim Housing Benefit and would no longer be a financial drain on BCC Housing budget. At long last it does seem that my concerns and ideas have been taken on board, or at least we will have to wait and see, as it's alright saying one thing on paper, but implementing it is another.
