Poverty And Working Families
As a councillor, I often see the other side of life, that is to say, those families where one or both parents work their sock off to provide for the family, some are owner occupiers, whilst others rent accommodation.
Either way, they care deeply about their family, what they can and do provide and that they are convinced that working gives the right signals to the children.
Yet for many in this situation, they are the poorer as a report to be published tomorrow will clearly inform.
How do we sort this one out? The last Labour Government attempted to do it, by the introduction of the minimum wage, but as they did, they also improved benefit payments.
Plans by IDS to revolutionise benefits, could if introduced properly, could be the answer, but balancing the needs of those on benefits and those in poorly paid work is not going to be easy.
